Thrummed Mittens

Thrummed Mittens

I won a gorgeous skein of yarn in a monthly mini drawing in the Fiber Indie Experience Co-op. ( A great group of indie fiber artists!) This yarn was dyed by Kim from The Wacky Windmill - gorgeous fall colors on thick luscious 1 ply heavy worsted weight yarn - perfect for mittens!

Wacky Windmill

I've never made thrummed mittens, but have always been very interested every time I see a pair - this seemed like a good time to try it.

Thrummed Mittens

Pattern: Snug by Robin Melanson from Knitting New Mittens and Gloves
Yarn: 75 grams TWW Getting Heavy - hand-dyed by Kim at The Wacky Windmill and 18 grams of mixed BFL roving.
Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm)
Size: Woman's Medium (36 stitches around - 8" circumference / 10" cuff to tip length)
Modifications: Knit one extra 5 row vertical repeat for the perfect length. Turned ribbed cuff lining inside and picked the cast-on stitches at round 1 of hand, instead of slip stitching at end. Knit round 2 then start gusset increases on round 3.

Now THESE are some very warm mittens!

The cuff is thick, snug and warm too...

Next time I would be even more generous with the thrums either making them thicker or just adding more of them, but I sure do like these mitts and can't wait to see how warm they are this winter!
